What is a volcano?
An opening in Earth's crust that allows super heated materials from beneath the crust to reach the surface?
Pt. 1- What is a blizzard?
Pt. 2- How is it dangerous? (each way gets 100 points.)
Pt. 1- A snowstorm with high winds.
Pt. 2- Driving in a blizzard can be dangerous. Trees and buildings can cave in under the weight of snow. People can be harmed by extreme cold.
What is the cause of a sudden slide of snow, ice, and rock down a mountain? (each one is 100 pts.)
1.) New snow falls on old snow.
2.) Snow piling up too quickly.
3.) Rapid Melting
4.) Earthquakes
5.) Changes by humans or other animals
What is an Earthquake?
A shift within Earth happens. The shift causes the crust to shake.
What is a Tsunami?
A massive wave that can cause damage when it reaches land.
1.) What is an eruption? 2.) What are the two ways a volcano can erupt?
1.) The release of volcanic material. 2.) They can ooze out, or explode and release rock/material
Part 1- What are tornadoes?
Part 2- How dangerous can they be? (mild vs powerful) (points can be earned for answering both)
Part 1- Funnel-shaped wind storms that reach from clouds all the way to the ground.
Part 2- A mild tornado can uproot trees and other plants. A powerful tornado can destroy whole neighborhoods.
What is an avalanche?
The sudden sliding of snow, ice, and rock down a slope.
What is a fault?
A crack in the Earth's crust
What causes a Tsunami?
An earthquake that ruptures the ocean floor.
How might a volcano affect people who live near it?
Lava can cause buildings to burn. Lava flows can move across the land, killing plants and animals in their path.
Where and how are hurricanes formed? (must be specific with climate)
Hurricanes begin over warm ocean water. Warm, moist air over the ocean rises. It is replaced by cooler air, which heats and rises.
What is a landslide?
the sliding of rock and soil down a slope.
What is one effect of an earthquake?
damage to buildings, roads etc..
What other natural hazard can happen after a tsunami reaches land?
Flooding
What happens when lava cools? Why is this difficult?
it forms rock which is difficult to remove from roads or other facilities.
As a hurricane gets stronger, what happens to the wind speeds? How is this dangerous?
The wind speeds increase.
Hurricane winds can tear buildings apart and snap the tops off tress.
What causes a landslide? (each way earns 400 extra points)
1.) earthquakes
2.) heavy rain
What causes an earthquake?
When tectonic plates push, pull, or slide past each other. Eventually that stress is released.
Can a tsunami be prevented? Why?
No. It is caused by a natural force.
What volcanic hazard do you thin would be the hardest to protect people from?
Ash would be the hardest hazard to avoid since it would cover surfaces and make breathing difficult.
What are the two causes of flooding from hurricanes?
Rain from the massive storm clouds
Storm surges (the rise in sea level)
Why is it dangerous for a landslide to fall into a river that is close to a town?
The landslide can block a river causing a temporary dam and a lake/large amount of water to form in one place. When the dam breaks the flood can wash away towns along the river!
Explain two ways that plates move along faults
they push, pull and slide past each other
In which direction does a tsunami move?
All directions
