Who came up with the theory of Evolution

Darwin

100

How long does natural selection take

long time

100
How do fossils provide evidence of evolution

see change over time

100

the type of selection that favors 1 phenotype

directional

A population of grasshoppers in the Kansas prairie has two color traits, green and brown. Typically, the prairie receives adequate water to maintain healthy, green grass. Assume a bird that eats grasshoppers moves into the prairie. How will this affect the population

mostly green

200

Name 1 of Darwin's 4 factors

struggle, overproduction, variation, advantage

200

Can individuals change their traits

no but populations can

200

How do homologous structures provide evidence of evolution

same structure different function show change to suit environment

200

type of selection that favors both extreme phenotypes hurting the heterozygotes

disruptive

A scientist measures the circumference of acorns in a population of oak trees and discovers that the most common circumference is 2 cm. A squirrel can break open the acorns if they are 2cm or smaller.  What would you expect the most common circumference(s) to be after 10 generations?

larger than 2cm

Name 1 organism Darwin observed in Galapagos to help him develop his theory

tortoise, finches, etc

300

in Natural selection what determines if a trait is a benefit or disadvantage?

nature!

300

How do vestigial structures provide evidence for evolution

why grow something we dont need/use, leftover

300

the type of selection that favors the heterozygotes, hurting the extremes

stabilizing

There are 2 types of worms:   worms that eat at night (nocturnal) and worms that eat during the day (diurnal).  The birds eat during the day and seem to be eating ONLY the diurnal worms.  The nocturnal worms are in their burrows during this time. Each spring when the worms reproduce, they have about 500 babies but only 100 of these 500 ever become old enough to reproduce.

nocturnal

What was the name of the book Darwin wrote

Origin of Species

400
Can natural selection work on any population

if they meet the 4 factors!

400

How can DNA provide evidence of evolution

similar DNA show relatedness

400

type of selection when favorable traits are bred and chosen by others

artificial

In ostriches, there are 2 types: ones that run fast and those that run slowly.  The fast birds can reach up to 40 miles an hour.  Jackals love to eat ostrich, and they can reach speeds of up to  35-40  miles per hour.  A flock of ostrich will lay ~ 10 eggs (each mother only lays 1),     but many rodents break into the eggs and eat the fetus before they hatch.

faster

Darwin is credited with the theory of evolution, who was the other scientist that we discussed in class as well.

jean baptist lammark

Define Natural Selection

the fact that population will change over time to consist of traits suited for the current environment in which they live

500

What is 1 piece of evidence scientist have to support the theory of evolution

fossils, homologous structures, vestigial structures, DNA, observations, bacteria, ETC

500

Provide 1 example of artificial selection

There are two types of rabbits: those that strictly eat grass and those that strictly eat berries and flowers.  A drought occurs one year,  and the plants have difficulty producing any extras (flowers, berries, etc.).

They can only try and keep themselves green.  The rabbits have had babies all year long but many are eaten by foxes or hawks Due to the drought, many have starved to death.
