Mrs. Bethune's background as a teacher inspired her to open the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls in Daytona Beach, Florida. On October 3, 1904, the Daytona Educational and Industrial Training School opened with just five students. Eventually the school blossomed to include a farm, high school, and nursing school. The school became this co-educational body of learning in 1929 after merging with Cookman Institute and was fully accredited in 1943.

In 1974, Mrs. Bethune became the first Black leader and the first woman to have a monument, the Bethune Memorial Statue, erected on public park land in this park located in this city in honor of her remarkable contributions. She also became the only Black woman to be honored with a memorial site in the nation's capital in 1994.

Mary McLeod Bethune achieved her greatest national and international recognition at this Washington, DC edifice located at 1318 Vermont Avenue that is now a historic site. It was the first headquarters of the NCNW and was her last home in Washington, DC. From here, Bethune and the Council spearheaded strategies and developed programs that advanced the interests of African American women and the Black community.

Under Dr. Height’s helm during the 4th annual Uncommon Height Gala in 2002 – an onsite challenge fundraiser led by this media mogul led to raising $5.4 million in cash and pledges which paid off the mortgage on the national headquarters building … she also donated $2.5 million of her own money that evening.

Without financial and in-kind donations, the Mitchellville-Bowie Section would not be able to carry out it’s important service work in the community. One of the earlier fundraisers was a hat-themed fashion show. For the past several years they have embarked on this successful fundraising venture – bringing family and friends together to enjoy crustaceans.

In 1937 Height started her early career working for this multicultural women's organization. It was here, while employed as Assistant Executive Director of the Harlem branch that Mary McLeod Bethune noticed young Height. Mrs. Bethune invited Height to join NCNW which she had just founded, two years before.

Erected July 10, 1974 this item depicts Mrs. Bethune supported by the cane given to her by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and handing a copy of her legacy to two children.
