Describe 6 ways in which a VRC should respect a client’s confidentiality

  • Respect for Privacy – solicit private information from client ONLY when beneficial to rehabilitative counseling process
  • Respect for Confidentiality – never releasing client information without a signed client release unless court order or required by law
  • Multiculturalism and Diversity – develop and maintain awareness and sensitivity of client’s cultural understanding/meanings of confidentiality (use of interpreters – local vs. phone/video)
  • Permission to Record – obtain permission in advance of recording any meeting/communication and having ongoing conversations about when, why, who client information can be shared, consider legal and clinical implications and destroy records within jurisdictional requirements
  • Explanation of limits of confidentiality – share with clients when confidentiality may not be able to be maintained
  • Disclosure to Employers – obtain written consent from client before disclosing relevant information to prospective and current employers; educate clients, employers and others about privacy rights, confidentiality; share only job-relevant information about the client to parties who have a need to know
  • When speaking with peers for advice or resources, always speak about case in de-identified terms (avoid using names or any PII)
