What is GBS screening?
This is the main factor to differentiate early vs late onset neonatal sepsis.
What is time?
EOS is <72 hrs of life
LOS is >72 hrs of life
This pathogen is most likely to cause sepsis within the first 72 hours of life
What is Group B Strep?
This is the drug combo for empiric treatment of neonatal sepsis
What is ampicillin + gentamicin?
This is the main risk factor for neonatal listeriosis.
What is maternal consumption of unpasteurized milk/cheese and/or unwashed produce?
This finding in the delivery room should put you on the lookout for neonatal sepsis.
What is meconium stained fluid?
Gram - bacteria most likely to cause neonatal spesis
What is E. coli?
This drug inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis and while it is broad spectrum, it is beta lactamase sensitive.
What is Ampicillin?
(also amoxicillin)
There is an increased risk in this pathogen causing LOS in multiple gestation pregnancies
What is Strep agalactiae/GBS?
Vital signs are vital! This measurement is usually low in preterm infants with sepsis and high in term neonates.
What is temperature?
Timing of prenatal syphilis screenings
What is 1st prenatal visit, 3rd trimester, then at delivery?
This is the most effectve timing and medication for intrapartum GBS prophylaxis
What is PCN G/Ampicillin every 4 hours at least 4 hours prior to delivery?
