This system is subdivided into the Autonomic Nervous System and the Somatic Nervous System
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
These two organs make up the Central Nervous System
What are the brain and spinal cord?
This system elicits a survival response when a stressor is encountered.
What is the sympathetic NS
Part of the brain that is divided into 4 separate lobes
What is the cerebrum?
Made up of three layers that protect the brain and spinal cord
What are the meninges?
Subdivided into 2 subdivisions, the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
What is the Autonomic Nervous System
This encases the spinal cord and acts as a protective outer covering
What is a vertebra?
Pairs of nerves that arise from the undersurface of the brain and primarily serve the head and neck
What are the cranial nerves?
This system includes blood vessels, stomach, intestines, bladder, lungs, pupils, heart, and glands.
What is the ANS?
Speeds up the rate at which an impulse is transmitted
What is the myelin sheath?
This branch of the Peripheral Nervous System subdivides into Sensory and Motor branches
What is the Somatic Nervous System?
These are spaces inside the brain that are filled with a small amount of cerebral spinal fluid.
What are the ventricles?
What are spinal nerves?
The largest division of the brain
What is the cerebrum?
A chemical that is needed in order for an impulse to jump from the axon of one neuron to the dendrite of another neuron.
What is a neurotransmitter?
This system connects the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body and includes the cranial and spinal nerves.
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
These lie between sensory neurons and motor neurons and are predominately found in the central nervous system.
What are interneurons?
Both of these systems serve the same organs, but have antagonistic effects.
What are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems?
This layer of the meninges lies closest to the skull and vertebral canal and is made of a tough fibrous tissue.
What is the dura mater?
This brings nutrient to the Central Nervous System and eliminates waste products.
What is cerebral spinal fluid?
This branch of the Peripheral Nervous System conducts impulses to the cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glandular epithelial tissue.
What is the Autonomic Nervous System?
This lobe of the brain is related to thinking.
What is the frontal lobe?
Clusters of neurons in the Peripheral Nervous System are referred to as this.
What are ganglia?
This part of the NS allows for involuntary activity.
What is a reflex?
This part of the NS allows for voluntary activity.
What is a reaction?
