What are the 3 steps to active listening?

  • Body language: Use your body to communicate attention and interest, turn toward the client, smile, make eye contact, get down to client's level, nodding, tilting your head are ways to convert interests.

  • Verbal encouragers: “listening noises” can be used to motivate a client to keep talking.

  • Paraphrasing: Paraphrase what the client said to check for understanding and allow the client to feel heard/establish empathy.

    • Do’s: be present, create a safe and quiet space for challenging conversations, maintain an appropriate amount of eye contact, commit to what you are saying/what the patient is saying, and commit to your purpose.

    • Don’ts: make too much eye contact, be looking elsewhere, be typing at the computer or writing notes, fidget/tap toe or otherwise convey impatience, and have heavy conversations in a crowded environment.
