A type of seizure that does not involve entire brain
What is a partial seizure
Described as occurring in times of stress as a dull, tight and constricting headache. Pain is non- pulsatile and bilateral in nature. It usually occurs in the frontal or occipatal regions.
What is a tension headache?
Acute paralytic disease that decreases myelin in the nerve roots and peripheral nerves. Pt usually has a mild febrile illness 2-3 weeks prior
What is guillain barre
Provide supportive care, remember ABC's and assess for other causes of paralysis
What is the treatment for guillain barre?
Inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Can be viral or bacterial
What is meningitis ?
Electrolye imbalances, fever, hyperglygemia, stress, fatigue, hypoxia, tumors, trauma, ETOH withdrawal
What are some causes of seizures
These headaches are unilateral occurring in the orbital or temporal areas. The pain is intense and last from 15-180 minutes.
What are vascular headaches
This illness is a defect of neuromuscular transmission causing weakness in upper extremities
What is myasthenia gravis
Treated with mestinon and prostigmin
What is the treatment for myasthenia gravis
Bleeding between the skull and dura. Is arterial and deterioration is rapid ( talk and die)
What is an epidural bleed?
A patient may have total loss of consciousness, become incontinent, have muscle spasms and have irregular breathing
What is a generalized or grand mal seizure
Occur in response to triggers such as environmental, hormonal, emotional , food or medication.
What is a migraine
Motor nerves no longer transmit impulses causing loss of motor function and muscle degeneration
What is Lou Gehrig's disease?
There is no cure and you can only give supportive care. Remember that patient still has cognitive function.
What is the treatment for Lou Gehrig's disease?
Hemorrhage between dura and arachnoid . Venous in nature and may develop rapidly or occur over time
What is a subdural hematoma?
The patient becomes relaxed, breathes deeply and has a depressed level of consciousness when seizure is over
What is a postictal state
Treated with oxygen and occurs mostly in men
vascular headaches
Autoimmune disease brought on by triggers such as viruses , stress and seasons. Causes destruction of myelin sheaths
What is multiple sclerosis
Steroids, interferon and immunosuppressants are used to treat this condition
What is the treatment for multiple sclerosis ?
Hemorrhage between the arachnoid and pia. Can be caused by trauma, hypertension or aneurysm rupture
What is a subarachnoid bleed?
Safeguard the patient from injury , give benzodiazepines and anti convulsants and look for causes
What is the treatment for a seizure patient
Symptoms include having an aura with pain that is severe, pulsating , throbbing and unilateral . Photophobia and vomiting also may occur
What are symptoms of a migraine
Loss of dopamine producing cells in the brain
What is Parkinson's disease
This disease is treated with drugs that replace or stimulate dopamine
What is the treatment for parkinson's
Surgical evacuation
Ultimately the treatment for all intracranial bleeds
