The chemical messengers released across the synapse.
What are neurotransmitters?
One is responsible for movement, the other for feeling. One is at the back of the Frontal Lobe, the other is at the front of the Parietal Lobe. They are on each side of the Central Sulcus.
What are the Motor Cortex/Strip (Precentral Gyrus) and the Somatosensory Cortex/Strip (Postcentral Gyrus)?
If the brain lacks enough of this neurotransmitter, it's possible to develop depression.
What is serotonin (5HT)?
The imaginary line from the feet, upward along the spinal cord, and extending to the front of the forebrain.
What is the neuraxis?
The parts of the Hindbrain
What are Pons, Medulla, and Cerebellum?
The 2 areas of the neuron responsible for bringing in incoming information thru the formation of synapses.
What are dendrites and soma (cell bodies)?
This lobe is responsible for vision and contains the primary visual cortex?
What is the occipital lobe?
This neurotransmitter is released in situations of great stress or during physical activity.
What is adrenaline (epinephrine)?
This part of the "hindbrain," whose name means "little brain," is the first part of the brain to form; it helps coordinate purposeful movement, rhythm, and balance.
What is the Cerebellum?
In the fall, leaves revert to their natural colors because this chemical stops working.
What is chlorophyll?
Aristotle's view of what is responsible for behavior, based on the psyche, which is from Greek mythology, the goddess Psyche, the "Goddess of the Soul."
What is Mentalism?
Descartes' view of the presence of the mind and the body, both necessary for human behavior - connected, but separate.
What is Dualism?
View from Darwin and Wallace, focusing on the brain as the source of human behavior.
What is Materialism?
Pseudoscience based on Gall's view that human behavior can be explained by feeling the bumps and indentations on the skull.
What is Phrenology?
Jerrison's formula computing the ratio of the weight of the brain vs. body size in determining behavior and intellect.
What is the Encephalization Quotient??
The "5th Lobe" of the brain.
What is the Insula (Insular Cortex)?
The imaginary line, drawn from the base of the spinal cord up to the front of the brain.
What is the Neuraxis??
Directional term relating to parts of the brain or body that is on or toward the back.
What is dorsal?
The directional term related to an area or structure located in the direction of the stomach.
What is ventral?
Toward the front end and toward the rear end, in that order.
What are anterior and posterior?
Toward the side (away from the midline).
What is lateral?
The Plane of Section that shows the brain structures from the side (inside of the brain).
What is Sagittal?
Gray matter on the outside of the brain is made up of this...
What are cell bodies and dendrites of neurons?
Area in the upper left temporal lobe that is responsible for the interpretation and understanding of language.
What is Wernicke's Area?
A region in the frontal lobes of the brain responsible for the production of speech.
What is Broca's Area?
