The sophomores Deandre, Winston, and Eric call Maury, "Maury-o". What are they hinting at with this microaggression and why is that unacceptable?
They are saying that he is black on the outside but white on the inside. This is unacceptable because they are saying that each race has only one way of being. African Americans/ Asian Americans / Latin Americans / Native Americans / Caucasian Americans can only have one experience when we know that is untrue.
He likes to draw and is the main character of our book.
Jordan
"Thanks for asking people usually just walk away." Who said it?
Alexandra
"You said it a jillion times" who said it and what type of figurative language is it?
Jordan - hyperbole
What neighborhood does Jordan need to act the toughest in?
Washington Heights
Talking about tacos, Andy says "I bet your mom's (tacos) are a lot better." to Ramon. Why is this a problem?
This is an issue because Andy is assuming that every person of Latin American heritage eats tacos or has a mom that makes tacos for them.
She wears a puppet on her hand and is what one might call eccentric.
Alexandra
Who was passed out while Jordan was talking to him on the first day of school?
Liam
"We were being beaten like a bunch of eggs."
Jordan - simile
The score of Jordan's first soccer game ---
11 - 1
Ms. Rawle consistently says "Deandre" instead of Drew's name. Why is this a problem?
She hasn't taken the time to get to know his name.
He wants to play Alexander Hamilton in the school play and like squash (the sport). He has been at RAD since Kindergarten.
Maury
Whose parents did Jordan's mom and dad tell that he wanted to be friends?
Alexandra's!
"We're being slaughtered."
Jordan - hyperbole
Who was waiting on the stoop out front of Jordan's house after his first day of school?
Kirk
"What are you, an Eskimo? Is that racist? I'm sorry if anyone found that offensive." Who said this and how do we feel about it?
It was Jordan's soccer coach, Mr. Roche. He has said several things that are absolutely microaggressions tinged with racism. The only difference is that he seems to be hyper-aware that he is making these mistakes and tries to apologize for them. Is it okay? No, but at least he is trying. Some never apologize and just say things like "Stop being sensitive," instead of acknowledging someone else's experiences.
He lives with his grandmother, is a phenomenal math student, and one of Jordan's friends.
Drew
Jordan and Maury talk about things that they like to try to find common ground.
Why was the conversation between Jordan and Maury awkward? List one example.
They don't really seem to have anything in common. Maury doesn't play video games, wants to join the play or play the cello in the orchestra, and likes a sport that Jordan thought was a vegetable.
I'm falling without a parachute.
Jordan - metaphor
Instead of orange slices or bananas during the soccer game, what does Mr. Roche give to the team for "fuel?"
Doughnuts
Ms. Rawle told Drew not to call Jordan "Dawg" in chapter 6. What happened before this to put this in the microaggressions category?
She has allowed Andy to call Collin and even Drew "Dawg" but has never said anything. She also called him "Deandre" again before starting the conversation for at least the 3rd or 4th time so far in the book!
He has been a math teacher at RAD for 14 years and still deals with microaggressions from staff members.
Mr. Garner
"Hey check this out Liam. The auditorium has the same name as you."
Why is Liam tweaking when Jordan says this?
It was actually named after his family and he comes from crazy money. He is worried he will be judged if others know his family's wealth.
"Riiinnggggg"
the bell - onomatopoeia
Who ask Jordan questions about who he lives with and guesses that it might be just his mom?
Ashley and Ruby
