Describe the events of the Bataan Death March.
After fighting against the Japanese to defend the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines, the U.S. surrendered. The Japanese had not anticipated such a large surrender, so the POWs were forced to walk to their POW camp. Along the way, thousands of U.S. troops died at the hands of the Japanese. 1,800 New Mexican National Guardsmen were part of the march, and only 900 made in home.
