Newton’s 3rd Law
Vocabulary
Name that law!
100

What is Newton’s first law of motion?

An object in motion with stay in motion/an object at rest will stay at rest, unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

100

What is Newton’s 2nd Law of motion?

F =ma

100

What is Newton’s third law of motion?

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

100

What is mass?

The amount of matter (weight) an object has

100

A magician pulls a tablecloth out from under dishes and the glasses on the tables don’t move.

Newton’s 1st Law

200

What would be the unbalanced force that slows down the person in this scenario?

A person standing on a skateboard pushes against a wall and propels themself backward.  They will eventually slow down and stop rolling.

Friction

200

What is the unit for force?

Newtons

200

When you jump, who pushes harder - you or the ground?

You and the group both push equally!

200

What is magnitude?

The amount of something

200

A person not wearing a seatbelt slams their head on the front dash of the car when someone slams on the breaks.

Newton’s 1st Law

300

Which has greater inertia, a bowling ball or a tennis ball? Why?

The bowling ball - greater mass

300

Explain what F, m, and a stand for in the equation.

F = force

M = mass

A = acceleration

300

If you place an object on a table, and it is being pulled with 24N, why is the object not moving down?

The table pushes back upon the object with 24N of force.

300

What is friction?

A force that resists sliding when two object rub together.

300

A baseball player swings the bat and hits the baseball, hitting a home run.

Newton’s 3rd Law

400

If you are running away from a bear, should you run in  straight line or a zigzag pattern?  Why?

Zigzag pattern because the bear has greater inertia and it’s harder for the bear to change direction.

400

What happens to force if the mass of an object increases?

It increases.

400

A soccer player kick a ball with their foot and their toes are left stinging.  Why?

Action: kicking the ball

Reaction: ball pushes back and makes toes sting

400

What is acceleration?

A change in an object’s velocity

(Speed up, slow down, change directions)

400

Pushing a child on a swing is easier than pushing an adult on the same swing.

Newton’s 2nd Law

500

You can set a playing card on top of a cup, and a quarter on top of the card, flick the card, and the quarter will fall in the cup. How does this relate to Newton's 1st Law?

An object’s tendency at rest stays at rest, so the quarter doesn’t move with the card.

500

A large football player and a small football player are running at you during a game. Explain who would hit you with greater force.  Why?

The larger player would hit you with greater force because he has a bigger mass.

500

A balloon is blown up and the person lets go.  What are the action and reaction forces?

Action: air out of balloon

Reaction: balloon moves forward

500

What is inertia?

An object’s tendency to resist change in its motion.

500

Explain how the egg drop relates to all three of Newton's Laws.

1st law: the object will keep falling until the ground stops it

2nd law: the heavier the device, the more force it will hit the ground with because of more mass.

3rd law.  The egg could break because as the device hits the ground, the ground hits back on the device with the same amount of force.
