Occupancy 101
A special amusement building regardless of occupant load.
What is an Assembly occupancy?
This portion of the means of egress is separated from the rest of the building as required to provide a protected way of travel to the exit discharge.
What is an exit?
These shall be held at expected and unexpected times and under varying conditions.
What are fire drills?
It is the standard for the installation of standpipe and hose systems.
What is NFPA 14?
Indicates a mandatory requirement.
What is shall?
Restaurants with fewer than 50 persons.
What is a mercantile?
For the purpose of this requirement, projections include devices such as lighting, signs and decorations that are limited in area.
What is headroom?
These devices, materials and equipment shall be used in accordance with their limitations and the manufacturer's instructions.
What are listed and labeled?
The testing of sprinkler systems would be covered under this standard.
What is NFPA 25?
Any structure used or intended for supporting or sheltering any use or occupancy.
What is a building?
This occupancy would include air traffic control towers.
What is a business occupancy?
These shall be permitted on existing buildings but shall not constitute more than 50% of the required means of egress.
What are fire escape stairs?
This type of decoration is not permitted in occupancies to include assembly, board and care, detention & correction, educational, dormitories or hotels.
What is combustible vegetation?
Electrical inspections of historic buildings would be covered under this standard.
What is NFPA 73?
A valved connection to a water supply, having one or more outlets, that is used to supply hose or apparatus with water.
What is a fire hydrant?
This occupancy is characterized by the presence of relatively small numbers of persons in proportion to the area.
What is a storage occupancy?
1) It is open for general occupancy.
2) It is open to the public.
3) It is occupied by more than 10 persons.
What is an occupied building?
In area's where smoking is permitted, these shall be provided.
What are noncombustible ashtrays?
NFPA 58.
What is the Liquified Petroleum Gas Code?
A street or alley or similar parcel of land, permanently appropriated for public use and having a clear width of not less than 10 feet.
What is a public way?
This occupancy is distinguished from an assembly occupancy in that the same occupants are regularly present.
What is an educational occupancy?
This type of egress is measured between the handrails.
What is an accessible egress?
No more than 200 persons per acre shall occupy these at any one time.
