Elie has a swollen foot and is sent to the hospital. Another prisoner in the hospital tells Elie that they do selections in the hospital as well, but they are more frequent. Elie is afraid that he will be deemed useless and sent away to die.

For it's value, Franek wants Elie's gold crown. In order to get it, Franek torments Elie's father by forcing them to march everywhere. Elie's father is unable to march in step, so Franek beats him until Elie gives in.

What happens to Zalman?
While running, Zalman gets terrible stomach cramps and cannot run any longer. Elie tries to convince him not to stop (as he will be killed), but Zalman physically cannot go on. Ultimately, Zalman pulls down his pants, falls, and is trampled by the oncoming waves of men.
