This indicates the main idea of a section of text
Heading/Subheading
This tells what is in the book, the names of chapters and what page the chapters can be found.
Table of Contents
This text feature lists words and gives the page numbers where the words occur in the book. It is in the back of the book and is in alphabetical order. It does not give the definitions.
Index
This shows events in the order that they happened.
Timeline
A picture with labels on lines pointing to various parts.
Labeled Diagram
This explains the graphic feature it is closest to.
Caption
This text feature tells the name of the text, and tells what the text will be about.
Title
This text feature is drawn by an person.
Illustration or picture
Heavy print that shows what words are important or what words can be found in the glossary.
Bold Print
Gives interesting facts or extra information about a topic. It is usually in a section separate from the other reading. (on the side)
Sidebar
Identifies the parts of something or tells what the parts are called
label
Listed text that is indented and aligned using a dot, symbol, or dash in front of each idea.
Bullets
Gives information to explain what the photo or illustration is about. It is above, below or next to the picture.
Caption
Slanted print that shows a word is important.
Italics
Words or a group of words that will lead to information on a website.
hyperlink
Helps the reader visualize real events, steps or objects described in the text
Photograph
This text feature helps us understand what we read by dividing the text into sections and explains what the sections will be about. It is at the top of each section.
Heading
Pictures with captions that could show steps, stages, or the progression of events.
Diagram
Large amounts of information or data organized into columns and rows with headings.
Table or chart
Allows you to see something in greater detail.
Close-up
Explains steps in a process for how something is made.
