Jordan has a fear of crowded and enclosed spaces. While in NYC, he had to ride the subway. Jordan and his friend bought tickets and stood on the platform to wait. Jordan closed his eyes and took slow, deep breaths. When the train arrived, it was FULL of people. Jordan slowly walked onto the train and looked around with wide eyes. His hand shook as he gripped the rail. He held the rail really tight. Jordan looked at his friend and said "I've been looking forward to this ride all day"

Then, she heard a friendly voice yell out, "Jen, is that you??" She looked over and saw her friend Maggie waving at her. Maggie ran over and gave Jen a hug.
One of the kids asked "Oh Maggie, is this a friend of yours?"

Mr. Smith doesn't live too far from school, so on sunny days he likes to ride his bike to school. The weather report said that it was going to be a sunny day. As he was about to leave school, he looked out the window. Even though it was sunny, he saw some big dark clouds in the distance. He also heard a rumble of thunder. When he checked the weather report again, it said there was an unexpected storm approaching. Another teacher, Mr. Jones, looked out the window, raised his eyebrows and said "It's going to be a tough bike ride home for you today."
Mr. Smith groaned. "Are you kidding me? I LOVE the rain. Who needs dry clothes anyway? Let's add some hail into the forecast to make it even more fun!"
1. What is the sarcastic comment? How can you tell that Mr. Smith was being sarcastic?
1. "Are you kidding me? I LOVE the rain. Who needs dry clothes anyway? Let's add some hail into the forecast to make it even more fun"

Last week, Toby helped Desiree carry a big pile of books into class (he had seen her struggling with them as she walked down the hallway).
Yesterday, Toby helped Desiree open her locker when it was jammed.
Today, Toby saw that Desiree was struggling to open the side door to get into the school building. She was holding a bag of supplies for the class winter party. He ran over to the door, opened it, and held it open as Desiree walked into school. Desiree giggled and said " Toby, you need to learn how to make yourself more useful. You just never seem to be around when I need help." She smiled as she spoke and she gave Toby a wink.
1. Did Desiree's words match the situation? Why?
2. What did Desiree do (body language) to let Toby know that she was being sarcastic?
1. Her words did not match the situation. She said that Toby needs to be more useful but there were several examples of times that Toby was helpful.
