Text Feature Basics
A section in the back of the book that gives you additional information.
What is the Appendix?
A list of important information or facts that can be found in the text that is emphasized by bold dots or starts.

What is a nonfiction source?
Words for pictures, illustrations, or charts to identify what something is.
What are labels?
A picture taken with a camera that emphasizes key points or adds interest.
What is a photograph?
Definitions of people, places, events and terms listed alphabetically in the back of a book.
What is a glossary?
Print that is italicized, bold, colored or capitalized to draw attention to key words in the text.
What are print styles?
The Harry Potter Series.
What is a fiction story?
Information presented in visual form to tell you where something is or where it happened.
What is a map?
A list of facts or numbers arranged in a special order, usually in rows and columns.
What is a table?
A line of text serving to indicate what the passage is about.
What is the heading?
A simple drawing using lines to explain where something is or how something works.
What is a diagram?

What is a caption?
Pages at the back of the book that tell where to find every important idea, term, place, person or event in the book.
What is the index?
A drawn picture that shows something important in the text.
What is an illustration?
A sheet presenting information or data in the form of a graph or table.
What is a chart?
An article in the Journal of Medicine.
What is a nonfiction article?
A visual representation of events in history displayed in a chronological order.
What is a timeline?
A guide that shows the reader how to sound out and pronounce a word in the text.
What is a pronunciation guide?
A list of books, magazines, and articles mentioned in a text to give credit for the information.
What is the bibliography?
A planned drawing consisting of lines showing how two or more sets are related.
What is a graph?
A Superman Comic book.

Extra information found in a box or margin of a page that the author thinks you will find interesting or informative.

This names or describes what you are going to be reading about.
