Some people say that cheating, professionalism, and nationalism in the modern games are a disgrace to the Olympic tradition. Since books had to be copied by hand, it took a long time to produce books and they were very expensive. Most people were illiterate, meaning they could not read. They did not have books to learn to read. The invention of the printing press changed all of that. Because the press could produce books faster and easier, books became less expensive. They also began to be printed in English, French, and German. Given this information, historians believe that the printing press is the reason for increased literacy rates in the 16th century.
