Cause & Effect
Reasons, examples, and support from a credible source that prove the writer's claim is accurate.
Evidence
Using extreme exaggeration to make a point; helps show strong feelings and create a dramatic effect.
Hyperbole
Words that are usually next to, or below an image, diagram, or chart that describe it.
Caption
A picture or photograph that helps the reader comprehend the main text.
Image
Clear order of events, beginning to end. Usually includes dates.
Key words: first, second, next, later, then, etc.
Chronological Order
The main argument the writer is making.
Claim
A common belief or idea about a group of people that is often not true for everyone in that group.
Stereotype
An alphabetical list of topics, people, and places and the page to find each topic. Usually at the back of the book.
Index
An organized way to show information and relationships between two or more things using numbers.
Graph
A problem is given and solutions to that problem are shared.
Key words: Dilemma, Solve, Problem, etc.
Problem & Solution
The people who will be reading the text.
Intended Audience
A short, funny, or interesting story about something that really happened. It helps make a point or make the writing more interesting.
Anecdote
Names what specific parts of a diagram or an image are.
Labels
An alphabetical list that gives important words from the text and their definitions.
Glossary
Gives the most important reason first and less important reasons next. Usually used to persuade.
Key words: Most important, greatly, the first reason, least of all, etc...
Order of Importance
Arguments that oppose or contradict the writer's claim.
