What is the meaning of the term ceiling level, and how does it relate to the student’s ability?
What is
Ceilings are thought to represent the level at which more difficult questions would not be passed. It relates to a student’s ability, in that the test questions typically get more difficult as the test progresses. Once a student hits the ceiling, it is accepted that the items after the ceiling would be too difficult for the student to answer. If a student’s ability is not typical (e.g., a student with a disability), then the student may hit a ceiling sooner than expected thereby, reducing his/her overall scores.
