I have a 75.4% in my test/quiz category- will I pass the course if my overall course grade is an 80%
No. You must achieve a 75.5% or higher in test/quiz category to sucessfully complete NURS 110.
My clinical day starts at 0530- what time should I be there?
That depends on you! If the start is 0530- anytime BEFORE that is acceptable!
I didn't know an answer to a question on the exam so I asked one of my classmates after the exam- is this ok?
Technically, no. This would be a violation of the academic standards. You can always come and ask me and I am happy to go over a question with you!
I want to post about my first day at clinical, should I?
This can be tricky. If it were me- I would document what I want for myself, and not the Internet.
I am going to be late for class. It is ok to text Mrs. Collingwood that I will be late?
No. You can contact me via email or Canvas.
I need to speak with Mrs. Collingwood, where can I find her office hours posted?
In the syllabus, and outside my office door.
I have some really cute new tennis shoes! But they aren't all white- can I wear them?
Of course. As long as they are clean and a full shoe (no Crocs, slides, or Birkenstock type shoes) that is fine with me. When your feet are happy, you are happy. Trust!
AI is awesome. Can I use it to help me write my assignments?
Negative. Use your brain. It will benefit you in the long run.
My family wants to know about what I learned today at clinical! Can I share this?
Again- I would avoid this at all costs. Decatur and surrounding areas are pretty tight knit in my experience. No patient info can be released. I would keep it very broad and give them "I gave meds today!" Or, "I got to follow the wound nurse around and learned SO much" Nothing specific.
I saw the cutest chicken decor at TJ Maxx and I know Mrs. Collingwood would love it! Can I text her and let her know?
Again, no. I would love to hear about it the next time I see you in person though!
I am having difficulty with the curriculum, where can I find resources to assist me?
In the syllabus :)
I am the emergency contact for my child's school so I need to have my cell phone with me on the clinical floor. Is this ok?
Unfortunately, no. This is your time to invest in your education and your future. It is not forever. You will have a few opportunities to go to our conference room and check your phone. But NO cell phones are allowed on the clinical floor.
I didn't have time to study for my exam so I wrote some "things to remember" on my leg. They aren't test answers, is this ok?
...........No............ The ONLY body part you should be utilizing is your brain.
My patient I cared for last week was discharged and I want to know how they did after our day together. Can I ask?
After you have completed your care for a patient- it is no longer your right to know what care they received after that.
I need a reference for a job I am pursuing. Mrs. Collingwood is one of my instructors- this means I don't have to ask before putting her down. True or false?
False. ALWAYS ask before using someone as a reference. And also know, your instructors will be truthful when providing references.
I am going to miss a lecture day, how do I get the material I missed?
From a classmate. I post only highlights of the curriculum and you will miss out on a lot of material if you don't obtain notes from a classmate.
I need to eat throughout the day. Can I bring food to clinical?
Please do. I will have snacks with me too. It is unreasonable to expect you all to go all day without eating and or drinking. There is no food allowed on the clinical floor however. A break room or conference room is the perfect place to grab a bite or a drink.
I got caught cheating. I am ashamed. What is going to happen now?
According to RCC Academic Integrity Policy- you can be "subject to disciplinary action up to and including failure of a class or suspension/expulsion from the College."
My parents friend told them I cared for them while at clinical. My parents asked me about their care. What should I tell them?
The old trusty "I cannot disclose what I did or did not do during my clinical rotation". That is it. Honestly after you say it so many times to people- they quit asking.
I need to send an email to one of my nursing instructors/professors. How should I start the e-mail?
The following are great!
Good morning Mrs. Collingwood,
Dear Mrs. Collingwood,
Mrs. Collingwood,
Never should "hey" or "hi" or "Ashley" be used.
If I show up late for an exam- what do I do?!
Notify Mrs. Collingwood that you will be late (she worries). Wait outside of the classroom until all other students have completed their exam/quiz. You will then take the quiz in the Testing Center by the end of the day (1700) and accept a 10% automatic deduction of your grade.
How can I prepare for the clinical day?
YAY! Great question! Review head to toe assessments, be sure of what your expectations will be and come prepared with an open mind. Clinical provides an opportunity to bridge what you learn in class to what you will practice like when you are on your own!
This exam is difficult content. I want to get together with classmates and form a study group and share notes and thoughts. Is this ok?
Absolutely! Please do this. Several brains are better than one. Often times students get different things from lectures and benefit from hearing other students understanding!
What happens if I violate HIPAA while at RCC?
You could be dismissed from the program. It is a federal law that all healthcare workers must respect.
I want to make a good impression during class and clinical. How should I go about this?
Think of a nurse or a professional that you look up to. Or that left a mark on your, how did they act? How would you want your family member cared for?
Absolutely no derogatory remarks, foul language, slang terms, etc.
There is a time and place to have fun while learning. But the expectation is to keep if professional!
