Why do we use incense during mass?
The usage of incense adds a sense of solemnity and mystery to the Mass. The visual imagery of the smoke and the smell remind us of the transcendence of the Mass which links heaven with earth, and allow us to enter into the presence of God. The purpose of incensing and the symbolic value of the smoke is that of purification and sanctification.

As the priest places a piece of the Sacred Host into the chalice, he prays, “May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.” This gesture then represents the unity of the Sacrament: the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus is truly and fully present in both the Precious Blood in the Chalice and the Sacred Host on the paten.

Why does the priest kiss the altar?
The altar represents our Lord, who as we pray in the Preface of Easter V “showed Himself to be the priest, the altar, and the lamb of sacrifice.” Moreover, traditionally relics of the saints are placed in the altar, which themselves make the altar worthy of such veneration.
