Assessments are tools that help us determine a client's physical and cognitive skills needed to function or perform tasks.

What is ADL/IADL training?

OTs teach individuals skills needed to engage in their daily activities, such as dressing, grooming, and meal management.

What is the focus of OT?

OT is function-based. This means we adapt the environment and teach individuals skills needed to engage in "doing life". Ex. accessing food hampers and community services, transportation, doing laundry

Activities you do that contribute to society i.e. volunteering, studying, grocery shopping

What are functional assessments?

OTs observe how an individual is currently completing their daily tasks and use this information to make recommendations.

What are some environmental adaptations?

OTs can modify the environment to assist an individual to complete their tasks. Ex. grab bars in washrooms, wheelchair/walker prescriptions

What is an activity analysis?

OTs break down an activity into steps and identify the physical and cognitive skills needed. This is used to help us adapt and modify difficulty level (grade) during goal setting.

Cognitive assessments assess an individual's thinking skills such as attention, memory, executive functioning and language. Ex. MoCA, MMSE

OTs use motivational interviewing to identify individual's values and reasons for change to set achievable goals tailored to them.

Activities that are considered to be unhealthy or deviant within a particular social, cultural, and political context.

What are standardized assessments? 

Strong evidence-based assessments that are conducted and scored in a consistent way. Ex. COPM. Some assessments allow you to compare an individual's data against a population. Ex. AMPS

What are coping strategies?

OTs teach clients skills such as CBT, DBT and self-regulation skills to navigate anxiety, addictive or self-injurious behaviours.
