What is the purpose of the document?
1. Delineating the domain of occupational therapy practice and services.
2. Delineating the dynamic process of occupational therapy evaluation and intervention services.

AOTA (American occupational therapy association)
“William Rush was 1st president”. National society for promotion of OT. Non-profit organization. Special interest sections (SIS) focuses on specific areas of practice.
What is scholarship and Scholarly practice in OT
Scholarship – Research: A systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.
Scholarly practice- involves using the knowledge base of the profession or discipline in one’s practice.
Multidisciplinary
Team members work side by side with each member with a clearly defined role with specific areas of responsibility.
*Members understand each other’s scope of practice
*Rely on each other to address their area of specialty.
*Evaluation, planning and therapy is done separately.
*Members communicate with each other frequently face to face or through patient charts.
*Families of patient meet team members separately.
Epistemology
The study of nature, origin, and limits of human knowledge
Provides a model of definition of OT to promote...
uniform standards and professional mobility across state occupational therapy statutes and regulations.
ACOTE (Accreditation council for occupational therapy)
To develop and implement the standards for all OT and OTA educational programs. Represents clinical and academic interests.
Scholarship of discovery
Original research, search for new research, validates existing knowledge, expands the knowledge base of discipline. (research projects, books, peer-reviewed journal articles)
Interdisciplinary
Team members share responsibility for providing services, often supporting the goals of other team members.
*Team members conduct separate evaluations but share results to come up with one plan.
*Families meet with team or representative of team.
Axiology
Study of values
Who does the scope of practice inform?
consumers, health care providers, educators, the community, funding agencies, payers, referral sources, and policymakers.
WFOT (World federation of occupational therapy)& NBCOT (National board for certification)
WFOT (World federation of occupational therapy)- Promotes the profession internationally. Maintains the ethics of OT internationally.
NBCOT (National board for certification)- Not for profit credentialing agency. Provides certification for OT’S and OTA’S.
Scholarship of integration
Integration of knowledge from different sources. Interpreting known knowledge and creating new understandings. In this form of inquiry, the scholars’ aim is to find the meaning of research findings and interpret the findings in ways that synthesize isolated facts from within and outside of the discipline and integrate them to provide a richer and more thorough understanding of the issues.
EX. Collaborating with clients on identifying their needs or on the needs of groups of people with particular disabilities or community-based challenges and reconfigure evidence-based practice/service methods to meet those needs
Transdisciplinary
Team members commit to teaching, learning, and working across disciplinary boundaries.
*Evaluation is planned, implemented and summarized by the team as a whole.
*Team makes decisions together.
*All members share discipline related info.
*Patient interacts with one member who then goes and consults with the rest of the team.
*Other members often observe while one is working with the patient.

EX. Developing guidelines for improved practices and procedures in OT.
Advantages of healthcare teams
*Teamwork *Enhance client safety *Holistic care *Integrated interventions *Reduce/eliminate duplication of services and gaps in care *Quicker and better-informed decision for patient clans.
