What is a Community Foundation?

A Community Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people in a local area. The Community Foundation accepts monetary donations from residents in a particular community and endows (or saves) it; then takes the earnings (from interest, dividends, etc.) from that "community savings account" and makes grants to nonprofit organizations within the community. Michigan has 86 community foundations, the most in the U.S.
