When people think of earthquakes in the United States, they tend to think of California, a state known for its frequent seismic activity. In recent years, however, people in the US states of Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas have been feeling the ground shake more often. An increase in oil and gas drilling in these states has led to "human-induced" earthquakes—those resulting from human activity. When wastewater is disposed of during gas and oil drilling, the water is forced deep underground. The resulting buildup of pressure can cause fault lines (cracks in the Earth's crust) to shift. According to Mark Petersen, head of the US Geological Survey's earthquake hazard mapping project, "In the past five years, the USGS has documented high shaking and damage in areas of these six states, mostly from induced earthquakes."

The lights on tall communication towers warn pilots to avoid the towers when flying at night. Unfortunately, the steady red lights often used on towers have the opposite effect on birds: the bright beams attract and confuse them. Instead of avoiding the lights, the birds fly directly toward them, crashing into the towers or becoming entangled in power lines. Millions of birds have died this way. However, there is a solution. Unlike steady lights, flashing or blinking lights don't attract birds. In response to demands from conservation groups, in 2016 the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States began requiring communication towers to use blinking lights instead of steady ones.

As Shane Loeffler, a geology student at the University of Minnesota in the United States, was flying home from Europe, he looked down at the landscape and began to wonder what he was flying over. Situated between Lake Huron and Lake Erie, the city of London, Ontario, is one of the snowiest cities in Canada. Like other cities near large lakes, it is subject to a phenomenon called lake-effect snow. Water retains heat, so lake water is often warmer than the air. In the lake effect, cold air moves over warmer lake water, initiating a process that can produce large snowstorms. Moisture from the lake evaporates into the cold air, warming it. Because warm air is less dense than cold air, it begins to rise. As it rises and moves away from the lake, it cools down. As the air cools, moisture condenses and forms into clouds. If the temperature is cold enough, the moisture falls to the ground as snow.
When cold air moves over warmer lake water, lake effect snow can be produced (created).
