The OT illustrates that God uses flawed people.  List three flawed people that God used.

  • Noah: Became drunk after the flood (Genesis 9:20-21). God used him to save humanity and all land animals from the flood

  • Abraham (formerly Abram): Twice lied about his wife Sarah being his sister out of fear (Genesis 12:10-20; 20:1-18). God used him to become the father of many nations and the patriarch of faith.

  • Sarah (formerly Sarai): Laughed in doubt at the promise of a son in her old age (Genesis 18:12). God used her to give birth to Isaac, the son of the promise.

  • Lot: Made a self-serving choice of land and ended up in Sodom, a wicked city (Genesis 13:10-13); offered his daughters to a mob (Genesis 19:8). God used him and saved him and his family from the destruction of Sodom.

  • Jacob: Was a deceiver and manipulator (e.g., in getting Esau's birthright and blessing; Genesis 25, 27). God used him to establish the twelve tribes of Israel.

  • Reuben: Defiled his father's bed by sleeping with his concubine (Genesis 35:22). He was the firstborn and patriarch of one of the tribes of Israel.

  • Judah: Conceived twin sons through Tamar, his daughter-in-law, after having delayed giving her his youngest son in marriage (Genesis 38). He became the patriarch of the tribe from which King David and the Messiah would descend.

  • Joseph's Brothers (Sons of Jacob): Were so filled with envy that they plotted to kill Joseph and eventually sold him into slavery (Genesis 37). God used their evil act to position Joseph to save their family and many others from famine.

  • Moses: Murdered an Egyptian and fled the country (Exodus 2:11-15); later expressed great insecurity about his speaking ability (Exodus 4:10); struck the rock in anger instead of speaking to it, which barred him from the Promised Land (Numbers 20:7-12). God used him to deliver Israel from Egyptian slavery and lead them through the wilderness

  • Aaron: Gave in to the people's demands and built the golden calf for them to worship while Moses was on Mount Sinai (Exodus 32). God used him as the first High Priest of Israel.

  • Gideon: Was fearful and repeatedly requested signs from God (the fleece) to confirm God's will (Judges 6:11-40). God used him to deliver Israel from the Midianites.

  • Samson: Was impulsive, had poor self-control, and was a womanizer who repeatedly broke his Nazarite vows (Judges 14-16). God used him as a Judge of Israel to begin to deliver them from the Philistines.

  • Eli: Was a weak father who failed to restrain his wicked sons, resulting in judgment on his household (1 Samuel 2:12-36). God used him as a priest and judge and for Samuel's spiritual training.

  • Saul: Disobeyed God's clear instructions regarding the Amalekites and acted out of pride and insecurity (1 Samuel 13, 15). God used him as the first king of Israel.

  • David: Committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged for the murder of her husband, Uriah (2 Samuel 11). God used him to be Israel's greatest king and the ancestor of Jesus Christ.

  • Solomon: The wisest man, yet he accumulated many foreign wives who turned his heart away from God to idol worship (1 Kings 11:1-8). God used him to build the first Temple in Jerusalem

  • Elijah: Fell into deep depression and fear, running away after his great victory over the prophets of Baal and wishing to die (1 Kings 19:1-4). God used him as one of Israel's most powerful prophets.

  • Jonah: Ran away in blatant disobedience from God's command to preach to Nineveh (Jonah 1:3). God used him (after he was swallowed by a great fish) to bring repentance and salvation to a great city.

  • Hezekiah: Out of pride, he showed all the kingdom's treasures to Babylonian envoys, setting up a future invasion (2 Kings 20:12-19). God used him as a reforming king in Judah who trusted God during a siege

  • Jeremiah: Was prone to self-doubt and lamented his difficult calling as "the weeping prophet" (Jeremiah 1:6; 20:7-18). God used him to prophesy to the people of Judah about their impending doom and exile.
