Incandescence

Light emmited by a hot object

Ex. Light bulb, sun, fire

100

Converging is the same as...

Convex

100

Hyperopia

Name FOUR keys points

-Eyes can't focus on close objects

- Image is formed behind retina

- Converging lens to correct it

- "Far-sighted"

Explain how a rainbow occurs...

Sun light seems white to the human eye but is actually made up of all colours of the rainbow. When it passes through a denser medium, it slows down and bends. A rainbow occurs when light from the sun reflects off of tiny water droplets in the sky and the dispersion of the rays as they pass through. When the light rays are inside the droplet, it reflects off the back of the droplet, changing direction. As the light exits, it bends again and since different colours have different wave lengths, they bend at different angles.

What is the Law of Total Internal Reflection?

The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection

200

Fluorescence

A substance absorbs high energy light and emits a glow

Ex. Neon highlighters

200

Diverging is the same as...

Concave

200
Myopia

Name FOUR key points

- eyes can't focus on distant objects

- image forms in front of retina

- diverging lens to correct it

- "near-sighted"

200

Define a sundog...

A sundog occurs when the sunlight refracts off of light crystals in the atmosphere. They occur when the sun is low and near the horizon. Sundogs are bright spots of both sides of the sun.

200

A convex mirror is always...

Virtual, upright, and smaller

300

Phosphorescence

Material absorbs light, holds onto it, then releases it over a long period of time

Ex. Glow in the dark bed room stars

300

Convex is the same as...

Converging

300

Presbyopia

Name TWO key points

- lens stiffens and loses ability to move as a person ages

- cilliary muscle can no longer change shape of the lens

300
What is the Illusion of Apparent Depth?

An optical effect in which the image of an object appears closer than the object. As an image is formed by reflection, an image is formed by the refraction of light

300

What kind of lens could you use to make a fire?

Convex

400

Chemiluminescence

Light produced directly by a chemical reaction

Ex. Glow sticks

400

Diverging is the same as...

Concave

400

Astigmatism

Name TWO key points

- blurred/distorted vision

- due to incorrect shaped area

400
Define Shimmering/Mirages

Shimmering is the movement of objects in hot air

Mirages are an optical effect caused by the bending of light through objects with extremely different temperatures caused by refraction of light in uneven heated air.

400

Which colour has the longest wavelength, and which has the shortest

Purple has the shortest wavelength and red had the longest

500

Bioluminescence

Light produced by a living organism

Ex. Fireflies, jelly fish

500

Define fiber optic cables

These transmit data using pulses of light through ultra-pure strands of glass or plastic

500
Define how a security mirror works

A security mirror works by reflected light rays diverging so that you can see a larger area

500

Define a radar antenna

A radar antenna is when incoming radio waves are detected to a detector located at the focal point of a dish

500

Define a solar oven

A solar oven is focused on a cooking surface which is located at the focal point.
