What is an adaptation?
A body part or behavior that helps a living thing survive
100
What is the difference between an inherited trait and a learned behavior? Give some examples.
Inherited traits: A characteristic that is passed from parents to their offspring. (The color of eyes, dark green leaves, dark hair, sharp teeth) Learned behaviors: A behavior that is learned by observing other animals or being taught. (ride a bike, read a book, hide from predators, hunt for food)

Draw and label the 5 parts of a tomato plant.
stem, leaves, flower, roots, fruit

Which of the following characteristics would an offspring likely inherit from its parents. a. Blue eyes b. Scar on arm c. bruise on leg
a. Blue eyes

Some animals adapt by camouflaging to their environment. What are some animals that do so? How does this help them survive?
Accept all reasonable responses (Some animals: polar bears, arctic hare, preying mantis, chameleon, grasshopper, etc.). Animals are able to survive because they can blend into their environment.

Chris' dad is tall, has brown eyes, and has brown hair. Chris' mom is short, has blue eyes, and has brown hair. Chris is tall with blue eyes and brown hair. Why do you think he was born with these traits?
Chris inherited his height from his dad, the color of his eyes from his mom, and the color of his hair from both parents. He has an equal chance of inheriting his height and eyes, but since both of his parents have brown hair, he was most likely to get this trait.

What is a life cycle?
The changes the living thing goes through during its life
200
Why would you test a science experiment more than one time?
You can test it more than one time so that you can make sure the outcome is correct. The results would be more reliable.

Compare and contrast what an animal living in the desert might inherit versus an animal living in the Arctic.
Desert: The ability to store water, waxy or smooth skin to stay cool, scales Arctic: Fur and blubber to keep warm, feathers, white skin or fur to camouflage.
300
What are some things that a tomato plant may inherit from its parents?
Color of the fruit, seeds, stem, leaves, color of the flowers, etc.
300
Which part of the plant develops into fruit?
The Flower
300
Which of the following is NOT a learned trait? a) Running b) A dog walking on a leash c) An arctic hare's white fur d) A bird building its nest on top of a lamp post.
c) An arctic hare's white fur

Name two adaptations of a polar bear. How do these adaptations help it survive in its environment?
Hollow hair, black skin, small ears, wide furry feet for balancing and walking on ice, sharp claws Accept reasonable responses.
400
What are some things that a polar bear may inherit from its parents? What are some things that it may have learned from its parents?
Inherited: white fur, black skin, claws for hunting and running Learned: make a den, hunting for prey, hiding from predators

Draw and label the life cycles of a ladybug, tomato plant, and frog.
Ladybug life cycle: egg-->larva-->pupa-->adult Tomato plant life cycle: seed-->sprout-->mature plant-->flower-->fruit Frog life cycle: egg-->tadpole-->froglet-->adult

Draw and label the spines, waxy coating, leaves, roots, and trunk of a cactus. How do these parts help a cactus survive in its environment?
Sharp spines help protect it from predators. The waxy coating on the skin and leaves of the cactus helps water stay inside the cactus. Shallow roots help it soak up water. The large trunk is like a water "tank" that stores water.

Name two adaptations of a penguin. How do these adaptations help it survive in its environment?
Feathers, flippers, webbed feet, beak to catch fish, storage stomach Accept reasonable responses.
500
What are some things you have inherited from your parents? What are some things that you have learned?
Accept all reasonable responses.
500
Compare and contrast the life cycles of the tomato plant, frog, and ladybug. How are they the same? How are they different?
Accept all reasonable responses. (Ex: Similarities - They all start small and grow as time goes on, and they all have 4 or more stages; Differences - the tomato plant starts as a seed, while the frog and ladybug start as an egg; they all have different names at different stages of their life cycle.)

If you were a hare, would you prefer to live in the grasslands, tundra, or desert? Why?
Grasslands because they have plants that the hare could eat and places where it could camouflage and hide. The tundra is too cold and the desert is too hot.
