Characteristics of Environments
100
Everything that is around a living thing.
What is an environment?
100
This is the path of energy from one living thing to another.
What is a food chain?
100
These organisms feed off of plants and animals that have perished and help to put nutrients back into the soil.
What are decomposers?
100
An event that happens when there is too much rain and a body of water overflows onto dry land
What is a flood?
100
Most plants need soil in their environment to provide nutrients to help make food. What would happen if the soil were washed away in a heavy rainstorm?
The plants and animals in that environment could perish.
200
All of the living and nonliving things in an environment including rocks, air, water, soil, and sunlight.
What is an ecosystem?
200
This is the beginning of all food chains and provides energy directly to plants, trees, and grass.
What is the sun?
200
To grow healthy and strong and be able to survive in an environment.
What is thrive?
200
A long period of time with too little rain
What is a drought?
200
Think about the characteristics of a tropical rain forest. Why would the organisms that live there not thrive in a desert?
In the rainforest, it rains almost daily and many of the organisms live in the shade of all of the trees. If the organisms thrive in that type of environment they would not be able to survive in the hot, dry temperatures of the desert.
300
All organisms of the same kind living in a place at the same time is called what?
What is a population?
300
Plants are known as this because they are able to make their own food.
What is a producer?
300
When an organism cannot get the resources that it needs it may die. What is another word meaning to die?
What is perish?
300
Some organisms have the ability to change their environments. For example, a beaver builds a dam around their home. Name one positive and one negative effect of a beaver build its dam across a stream.
It is helpful to many animals that choose live near water where beavers have built dams. A negative effect would be it the dam breaks the land could flood. (Think of the example from the video where the road flooded.)
300
If a flower is growing strong and healthy in a sunny garden and you dig it up and replant it under a nice shady tree, what will likely happen to the flower in its new environment assuming it will get the same amount of water and nutrients from the soil?
It may perish because it was thriving in the sunny environment and now it is in the shade.
400
This type of environment would be a habitat for fish, turtles, frogs and dragonflies.
What is a pond?
400
_______ is an animal that another animal eats for food. _______ is an animal that hunts and eats other animals for food.
What is prey? What is a predator?
400
To thrive in an environment, some organisms must compete for water, food, shelter, and space. Give an example of an organism that would have to compete for these.
Possible examples: Trees and plants in a forest because they grow so close together. So many fish living in a pond may need to compete for food and shelter.
400
Floods and droughts can be harmful to organisms that live in that environment but will ALL organisms perish? Why or why not?
No. Some organisms or species will perish but some may be able to move to another area that will provide them with the clean water, food and shelter they need. Some species can thrive because of the changes made.
400
Fish live in the fresh water of a pond. Lizards live in the hot, dry desert. What environmental characteristics help a penguin survive in Antarctica?
Cold temperature Water to swim and get food
500
This environment is hot and dry with long, tall grasses. It is home to elephants, giraffes, lions, and zebras.
What is the African savanna?
500
Sun-->Seaweed-->Fish-->Seal-->Polar bear What would happen to the population of the other organisms if the fish were to perish?
The seals would become ill, perish, or find other sources of food. There would be too much seaweed. The balance of the ecosystem would be thrown off.
500
If there is a period of drought and the plants and trees in an environment perish what will the other organisms living there do?
They will need to move, find other sources of food and shelter, or they may perish also.
500
How could some organisms thrive after a forest fire has occurred?
Some plants and trees will be able to thrive because there will be more space and they will not have to compete for the food, water, and sunlight they need.
500
These 4 environmental components are necessary for plants to grow or thrive.
