Where do individuals get their DNA? Specifically their chromosome pairs.
From their parents. Half from mom and half from dad.
Histrograms
Does having an adaptive trait guarantee you will survive and reproduce?
No
Are mutations bad?
Some are, but some are good and some are neutral.
What is the name of the Sim we used
Natural Selection Sim
How many chromosome pairs do humans have?
23 pairs, 46 chromosomes total
Variation
...there are predators in the environment
What is a mutation?
What is the name of the producer in the sim?
Thornpalms
You inherit DNA, which are instructions for proteins, which determine your traits.
What does the height of the bars on the bar graphs we have been studying represent?
Distribution
What determines if a trait will help organisms survive or not?
If there is a change to the environment, will a mutation take place to help populations survive? Why or why not?
Not likely. Mutations are rare and random. When they occur and help populations survive, it is purely coincidental.
Name the consumers of the sim.
Ostrilopes and Carnithons
Is it possible for offspring to have different traits from their parents without a mutation? If so, how?
Can a population have zero variation in a feature? If so, how?
Yes. All the organisms in the population can have the same trait for a feature.
Define natural selection
The weak are killed off while the strong survive and reproduce more.
Why are mutations so rare in populations?
Mutations are random changes to DNA which is very unlikely to happen.
Mutations often create proteins that do not connect so we do not see an effect.
Mutations that are non-adaptive get naturally selected out.
Name two things we used the sim to examine
-Mutations
-Camouflage
-Distribution of traits after many generations
-Reproduction and inheritance of traits
-Heat and cold tolerance
