what does squalene do
- helps to increase the buoyancy of the shark - oil is less dense than water
- Chondrichthyes do not have air-filled gas bladders to help with buoyancy so large amounts of oil perform this function instead
- Note that even with the squalene, sharks are still negatively buoyant, so if they stop swimming they will slowly sink

why are modifications that make structures good sites for gas exchange
- Large surface area - the more surface area exposed, the larger the area available for gases to diffuse through
- Thin surface - the thinner the layer separating the blood from the air or water, the more rapidly gases will be able to diffuse across
- Moist - gases can only efficiently diffuse across cell membranes if they are dissolved in water, so gas exchange surfaces must be kept moist
- Highly vascularized - (supplied by a large number of capillaries for increased perfusion) - the more capillaries, the more blood available for gas exchange, and increased perfusion of a gas exchange surface increases the partial pressure gradient which increases the diffusion rate of gases
