Why might the CHAMPS expectations change when we move from direct instruction to partner or group work?
Different activities require different levels of conversation, movement, help, and participation.
Natalie walked into class, dropped her backpack beside her desk, put her head down, and didn't say hello to anyone. What can you reasonably infer?
She may be tired, upset, frustrated, or having a bad day.
What's the difference between main idea and theme?
Main idea is what a text is mostly about; theme is the message or lesson communicated by a text.

He may actually be worried about the test or unsure of his answers.
A character lies to avoid getting in trouble, but the lie creates an even bigger problem. Give a possible theme for the story without using only one word.
Dishonesty can create bigger problems; telling the truth is often better than covering up mistakes.

A rule tells you what you can/cannot do; an expectation describes how you should behave or perform.

Daniel says, “Oh, great. Another homework assignment. Exactly what I wanted.” What can you infer about his actual feelings, and what clue helped you make the inference?
He probably does not want more homework. His exaggerated wording/tone suggests sarcasm.
An author describes one character as “determined” but another as “stubborn.” Both refuse to give up. Why might the author choose different words?
The words have different connotations: determined is generally positive, while stubborn is generally negative.
