In chapter 20, he doesn't think it's appropriate for Melody for participate in the test because he thinks she'll just be disappointed by not doing well.
In chapter 21, he apologizes publicly for underestimating Melody, as she is the only one in 15 years to get a perfect score on the test. He also corrects Claire when she makes a rude comment.
