  • Weather. Check the weather forecast before you go, and be prepared for the types of weather that are common in your destination. You should also check the weather again when you arrive. 
  • Animals. Be aware of insects, such as bees and ants, and poisonous plants, such as poison ivy. You can use repellents and netting to help protect yourself. 
  • Campsite safety. Avoid areas that are prone to flooding or mud, and look for sharp objects, broken glass, or other hazards. You should also pitch your tent at least two meters apart from other tents, and keep your campfire in a contained area. 
  • Cooking. Be careful when using knives, and keep a fire extinguisher and first-aid supplies on hand. 
  • Cold weather. Use the "C-O-L-D" method to stay warm: clean, dry, loose layers of clothing, and avoid overheating. 
  • Health. Consider the health conditions of your participants, and make sure they are fit and skilled enough for the activity. You should also be aware of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and how it can be affected by strenuous activity.
