Eddie, age 5, arrives at school with swollen and bruised ears and complains of back pain. His teacher sends him to the school nurse. The nurse asks Eddie to show her what hurts. Eddie pulls up his shirt revealing several linear welts on his back. When asked how he got the marks, Eddie is quiet. When pressured, he says he tripped on the playground. Should you file a Report?

Yes. The unexplained, patterned marks on Eddie’s back give you reasonable cause to believe he was physically abused. Even though Eddie has not told you he was abused or who abused him, the welts and his explanation, which is inconsistent with the injuries, are enough for you to suspect abuse. It is the job of the DCF investigator and the police to determine who injured Eddie and make sure he is kept safe from future abuse.
