What type of vision do I have?

Large and forward facing eyes give the owl a wide range of "binocular" vision.

100

Why do I have a squashed face (disc feature)?

stiff facial disc feathers or ruff to help…

 direct sound to the face.

When is your Ecology unit test?

Monday.

How many eggs can I lay?

Number of eggs varies by species.

Most species lay between 1 – 5 eggs, but some species can have up to 15 eggs.

200

Why do I have a non-spherical eye shape?

What problem does this cause?

The eyeballs are tube shaped to increase the ability to see long distances. This shape increases distance vision but means the eyes are fixed in the skull and an Owl has no periphery vision.

How many stomachs do I have?

2

When did dinosaurs become extinct?

about 65 million years ago (at the end of the Cretaceous Period), after living on Earth for about 165 million years.

Where do I like to build my home?

Opportunistic nesters.

An Owl can tell if a sound is higher or lower by using the asymmetrical ear openings.

The comb-like feather edge on my wings do what?

MAKES ME SILENT!

The comb-like feather edge breaks down air turbulence over the wings and  effectively muffles the sound of the Owl in flight making them silent predators.

What is NOT a stage in the Nitrogen cycle:

Nitrification

Assimilation

Transpiration

Denitrification

Transpiration is in the water cycle, not nitrogen cycle.

400

Do I live alone?

Owls live in pairs (at least for the breeding season) and both the male and female help raisethe young.  Some species live in a bigger group but most don’t.

Owl feathers have a comb-like leading edge... what is this called?

 fimbrae

400

Do Limes float or sink?

pourquoi?

SINK

They are generally denser than water

How fast do I fly? Why?

They can glide easily and fly slowly for long periods of time. Many species use this slow flight to hunt ground-dwelling prey from the air.

Owls have relatively large, rounded wings. The wings are broad, with a large surface area allowing them to fly buoyantly and  effortlessly, without too much flapping to conserve energy.

What are the names of my stomachs!

1. glandular stomach or proventriculus.

2. muscular stomach called the gizzard.
