This long island mammal was once extensively trapped for its fur. It was extirpated from long island by the early 1800s but since has made a recovery due to strict conservation laws. In the 1990’s long island started a breeding program to help these mammals continue to grow their populations.

This is one of the most aggressive waterfowl species in the world, especially during nesting and breeding time. These birds are strikingly beautiful but also can cause severe damage to native aquatic plant populations.

You will see these mammals “hauling out” (resting) on rocks and beaches to interact with other seals, nurse pups, avoid predators, and regulate their temperature. Originally found in Asia, this insect spread to the United States starting in 2014. It can be seen all over Oyster Bay during the summer months. This insect is characterized by grey/brown wings with black spots and bright red hind wings. It eats the sap on wild, ornamental, and agricultural plants and has no predators in the United States.

These canines are the newest resident to long island. They were typically found in the Midwest and traveled through both southern US and Canada to arrive on the east coast. You can find them in the woods, on golf courses, and even in central park.

This small shorebird arrives in mid-march and nests on sandy beaches. You can find signs all over Long Island beaches announcing the nesting of this bird and blocking off areas. This species population has been protected since the early 1900s but continues to decline due to coastal development and recreation.

This is one of the most numerous songbirds in north America, introduced to the United States by a fan of Shakespeare because the fan felt every bird Shakespeare mentioned should be in the US.  You can see these birds in big noisy flocks in lawns, city parks, and fields, working their way through the grass looking for insects.
