You walk further into the room and notice a soccer ball by the couch and that your favorite lamp is not in its usual location. You ask about the lamp, your child says "it broke-", you cut them off yelling "this is why we do not play ball in the house" and "you know that is my favorite lamp".

Thought: Someone broke it on purpose, they were being careless, 

Feeling: Sadness/disappointment/frustration

Fact: Your children was getting ready to practice soccer outside. While walking around looking for their sneakers, they bumped into the end table next to the couch causing the lamp to fall and break (by accident).

While on your way home from work you get a call from the school saying your child was marked absent from their sixth period class. The rest of the drive you mentally picture what else could have been more important than school and remember back when you were in school and the types of things kids skipped class to do. You get home and immediately tell your child they are grounded, take their phone, and send them off to their room. 

Thought: "They were doing something bad/they are not supposed to do"

Feeling: Angry, frustrated, disappointed in them. 

Fact: Your child was marked absent in error, there is another kid in their class with the same first name and the teacher was rushing to complete attendance, marking the wrong child absent.
