What is punitive justice?

Punitive justice, also known as retributive justice, is a system of justice that focuses on punishing criminals without looking at the root causes of the issue, or restoring trust in the community.

Constituency: The broader community that an organization wants to engage, specifically the people most affected by the issues that the organization works on. This includes people the organization hasn’t come into contact with yet.

Base: The people from the constituency who the organization can mobilize for action, such as attending events, protests and meetings

Member: People who are regularly involved and committed to the organization. The organization defines what that regular involvement looks like and may have formal criteria (for example, requirements that members pay dues or go to a certain number of meetings)

Leader: Members who (1) inspire and support the broader membership to be involved and deepen their involvement; (2) lead the group's analysis of problems, demands, solutions, and strategy; and (3) plan and execute activities.
