Why is it important for all dogs and cats, regardless of their lifestyle, to be on heartworm prevention?
Heartworms are contracted through mosquitoes. A mosquito can come into the house and bite your pet at any point, causing heartworms to grow in the heart if the animal is not on prevention. Giving your cat or dog heartworm prevention every month kills whatever larvae could be growing in your pet's heart before they become adults and begin to damage the heart. And preventing heartworms is MUCH cheaper than treating them!

What is something important that we need to do when a client gets a heartworm test for their dog, but declines the prevention that day?
Make sure that there is a valid prescription written in the prescription box (clients can get up to a year's worth of prevention per dog tested), and VOID out the white box above it. Put an ORANGE sticker on the yellow copy of the VC, in a spot that is not being used, that states the date 30 days from the date of the heartworm test. Inform the client that they have until the date on the sticker to purchase heartworm prevention either from one of our clinics, or from our online store - and show them the website and customer service number listed at the top of the VC.

Why is it okay to wait until a dog is 7 months old before testing him/her for heartworms?
Dogs can contract heartworms at any stage in their life. The earliest that a heartworm test can come up positive is when the dog is 6 months old because it takes heartworms 6 months to grow in the heart. We do not require testing until the age of 7 months because a dog would have had to be bitten on the day that it was born to have a positive test at 6 months old. Therefore, we give them until the age of 7 months before requiring a test.

What do we recommend to a pet owner who brings in an animal that has an unknown age and vaccine history?
We first get the vet to estimate the age, and then recommend age-appropriate shots. Then, if the pet is under 5 months of age, we recommend two more boosters of the distemper (and two rounds of FeLV if it is going to be an outdoor cat). If the pet is over 5 months of age, it will need just one more booster of the distemper (and one more FeLV if an outdoor cat). ALWAYS RECOMMEND FLEA, TICK, AND HEARTWORM PREVENTION!!

What is Feline Leukemia, and why is it important for outdoor cats to be tested BEFORE being vaccinated against it?
Feline Leukemia (FeLV) is a highly contagious disease spread through cat saliva. No cat-to-cat contact is necessary for the disease to spread - it is mainly spread through inanimate objects that cats rub up against (ex: trees, porches, etc.). It suppresses the immune system, and drastically lowers a cat's lifespan. Testing a cat that has been outside is recommended before vaccinating, because if the cat is positive for the disease, then the vaccine will not work. This disease is DIFFERENT from FIV.
