When is the regular deadline to study off-campus in the upcoming academic year?
February 1st at 11:59PM
"What does an "Outside the Classroom" recommendation mean? Who can serve in this role?"
Someone who has interacted with you outside of a strictly teaching role. For example, your coach, a supervisor for an on-campus job. It can also be your advisor because you've spoken with them about your goals more broadly.
"I want to study off-campus, but I can't because I don't speak any other languages."
You don't have to be fluent in another language in order to study off-campus. In many programs in non-English countries, you'll have a language course. However, many of our programs offer coursework in English as well."
London, Spain, Kenya, New York City, Adirondack Semester, and Bordeaux in France
Programs that are owned and operated by St. Lawrence University. Many of these programs have run for 20...30...50+ years. In many cases, a SLU faculty member travels with the group and teaches courses. In other cases, SLU has their own campus they operate in that area.

When is the deadline to study off-campus on a Summer 2026 Course?
"There are a bunch of short answer questions... how much should I write?"
1-2 chunky paragraphs per question. 1-2 sentences won't be enough!
"I want to study off-campus, but I can't because I'm a STEM major. I can't take a semester off!"
We partner with many universities around the world that offer lab-based science courses. Courses are reviewed by department chairs and can count toward major and minor requirements. You can study off-campus and still progress in your major(s)!
Name three examples of university-based programs.
Costa Rica, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, China, New Zealand, Australia, and France
"I am interested in learning about programs in Italy, Germany, or the Netherlands."

When is the Early Decision Deadline for off-campus study on a SLU Signature Program during the upcoming academic year?
December 6th at 11:59PM
1. Check to see if they are accessing the application correctly. Are they going to the CIIS website and clicking the "Apply Now" button on the program page?
2. Check to see if they are logging into Studio Abroad correctly. Make sure they are logging in with the SLU single-sign on instead of creating a new login.
3. Check to see if they already have an application open for the same semester. They can only open one at a time! Otherwise, they need to withdraw their other application.
4. If all else fails, call Kim for back-up!
"I want to study off-campus, but I can't because I'm an athlete."
Athletes absolutely study off-campus! Our coaches are supportive of students studying off-campus in their off-season. There are also summer courses for sports that span both semesters.
1. Charlie Beams on the cross-country team interned in Kenya with a professional running organization and ran with Olympic long-distance runners.
2. We had a student on the Rowing team join a rowing club in London and row on the Thames.
3. Our lacrosse team has a long connection with a Czech lacrosse team in Prague and play games all over Eastern Europe.
"I want to do an internship during my semester!"
Name three programs where you can enroll in an internship for academic credit during your semester.
Kenya, London, New York City, Washington D.C., Italy, the Czech Republic, China, Thailand, and Trinidad and Tobago
"I am interested in studying in New Zealand or Japan."

When is the Off-Campus Study Fair?
Thursday, October 9th from 11:00AM - 1:30PM
"I want to study off-campus, but I can't because it's too expensive."
1. Scholarships and financial aid carry over to any of our approved semester programs. On all programs, students continue to pay SLU tuition, room, and board. What you pay on-campus will be comparable to the cost of off-campus study, and that cost will be the same no matter what program you select.
2. SLU offers generous additional aid to help with costs unique to off-campus study like visas, passports, immunizations, and flights.
3. CIIS has budgeting resources for our partner programs and advisors are happy to meet with you to help plan.
Cost of living does vary around the world, but our goal is that the base cost of participation is the same as a semester on-campus.

When are Travel Enrichment Grants and Travel Research Grants due?
November 5th for the Spring Semester
April 5th for the Fall Semester
"....Can I use AI to write my essays?"
AI isn't explicitly banned, but note that the questions require reflective responses, personal responses, and specific details about your programs. Responses from tools like Chat GPT default to generic information about the country and often include incorrect information about the program. It won't give you a strong or competitive application-- and may actually hurt your application.
"I know that I CAN study off-campus, but I don't WANT to."
That's okay! It's not required, and there are a lot of legitimate reasons why someone may choose to stay on-campus. However, it's always a good idea to chat with an advisor in CIIS to learn about different types of programs. There are internship programs, programs in the United States, summer programs, or travel attached to courses taught on-campus.
What are our newest program offerings?
