What is Camp Half-Blood?
This setting is a hidden camp with fields and sword-fighting arenas. The main theme here is safety and belonging, because it is the only place in the world where demigod kids can train and hang out without getting attacked by monsters.
What is the fight with the Minotaur?
It starts on a rainy night when Percy, his mom, and Grover are chased by a massive beast. The plot takes a turn when the creature crushes his mom into dust, making Percy really mad, and the result is the minotaur dying at Percy's hands with the minotaur's own horn.
Who is Grover Underwood?
He is a loyal satyr who hides his goat legs under baggy jeans and uses a reed pipe to help in dangerous situations. His main problem is that he is very scared of underground places, but he still keeps looking for the lost god Pan.
How did Percy’s mom and Poseidon even meet in the first place?
They met at a beach when Poseidon was pretending to be a normal guy, and they fell in love.
What is Aunty Em’s Garden?
A big theme in the book is that looks can be deceiving. This happens at a creepy garden gnome shop in the woods. The place seems like a normal store by the road at first. But the conflict starts when the kids find out the nice lady giving them burgers is actually Medusa. She is trying to turn them into stone statues.
What is the trap at Waterland?
When they visit a water park to get Ares's shield, they fall right into a trap built by Hephaestus. The conflict gets a little rough because millions of robotic spiders attack them on a boat, and they get broadcast to Mount Olympus.
Who is Percy Jackson?
The main character has ADHD and dyslexia, and he feels really hurt that his dad pretty much left him. At first, he’s confused about where he belongs, but that turns into him really wanting to save his mom and stop a huge war between the gods
Why does Percy’s mom keep living with Gabe (Percy's stepdad)
She stays with Gabe because his gross smell keeps monsters away from Percy, so it actually helps protect him.
What is the Underworld?
This setting is located in a place under Los Angeles that you enter through a recording studio. The theme here is the power of family loyalty, because Percy is willing to travel all the way to the land of the dead just to try and sneak his mom back out.
What is the fight at the Gateway Arch?
This plot conflict occurs in St. Louis, where Percy gets cornered by a Monster and her chimera. To survive the poison and the fire, Percy is forced to jump off the building into the river.
Who is Luke Castellan?
Luke is the son of Hermes, who feels abandoned by his dad, so his anger leads him to betray Camp Half-Blood and help Kronos start a war between the gods.
Why does Percy think it’s his fault when his mom dies at the beginning
He thinks the Minotaur got her because he wasn’t strong enough to save her.
What is Mount Olympus?
This setting is on the secret 600th floor of the Empire State Building. It looks like a big palace in the clouds. A main theme is the pride of the gods. They just talk and fight about power and ignore their kids on Earth, who are trying to survive among monsters.
What is the Lotus Hotel and Casino?
After going across the country in the back of an animal delivery truck, the group stops at a cool casino in Las Vegas. The conflict is that the hotel gives them free stuff to make them forget their quest, and they accidentally waste five whole days playing games.
Who is Annabeth Chase?
Annabeth is really smart and driven, but at first she looks down on some cabins and is desperate to prove herself to her mom, Athena. Over time, she has to learn how to use her brain and plans while also caring about other people’s feelings.
What’s one reason Percy is mad at the gods after he gets to Camp Half-Blood?
He’s angry that they ignore their kids and leave them to deal with monsters on their own.
What is Waterbed Palace?
This setting is a cheap-looking mattress store in Los Angeles where a giant monster named Crusty tries to trick the kids into trying out his beds. The main theme here is that you can’t trust strangers just because they seem nice, which the group learns when the owner tries to stretch them out to fit the mattress sizes
What is the duel with Ares?
After discovering that Ares tricked him and that the master bolt is hidden in his backpack, Percy has to fight the God of War on a beach. The conflict ends when Percy uses a giant ocean wave to distract Ares and stabs him in the heel, successfully stopping the war between Zeus & Poseidn.
Who is Poseidon?
As the god of the sea, his moods are kind of like the ocean. He can be calm and chill one minute and then super angry and dangerous the next. He lives in a huge coral palace underwater, but there are old sea gods and monsters that keep causing trouble for his kingdom.
Why is the beach at Montauk so important to Percy and his mom?
It’s where they have happy memories together and where she and Poseidon first fell in love.
