Metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, alliteration (sally sells seashells by the seashore), irony (a teacher who hates kids is ironic), onomatopoeia (pow!), oxymoron (defining silence), idiom (don't throw the baby out with bathwater!), allusion (He's the Romeo to my Juliet)
While tone can change throughout a story depending on the subject, this quality remains consistent and is considered the "author's fingerprint."
