Tiananmen Square
A public square in the center of Beijing, China's capital, where a lot of political incidents have occurred. It is surrounded by Mao’s Mausoleum, the Great Hall of People, the National Museum, the Monument to the People's Heroes, and the Forbidden City. The squares' increased surveillance and silenced history demonstrate the CCP’s ability to inflict selective amnesia on Chinese citizens by erasing the 1989 protest and upholding the May 4th movement.

A Chinese general who let in the Manchus from Manchuria into China, leading to the fall of the Ming dynasty. He is framed as a traitor for letting in the froeigners, leading to the emperor killing himself
1st National Party Congress
Where the foundation of the CCP was established in Shanghai with 13 delegates, one of them being Mao. The final session was on a boat to escape persecution from the KMT police surveillance. The goal was to establish CCP goals of promoting Marxism, organizing labor unions, and establishing a socialist state.

A massive compound in the middle of Beijing where Emperors and advisors plotted China's empire for centuries. Now it has been revitalized to protect the country's cultural heritage, allowing the CCP to display how China’s past led it to build a new socialist utopia.
Sun Yat-Sen
The father of modern China, who fought against the imperial Qing Dynasty and led the revolution to end the monarchy. He founded the Republic of China and pursued a restorative nationalist project that seeked Chinas wealth and power.
1992 Consensus
A meeting between former KMT president, Ma Ying, and Beijing, where it was agreed upon that there was only 'One China', but with different interpretations of its rightful government.
Low-level Red & High-level Black
Low-level red: Well-intentioned actions that are in support of the CCP, but are tacky and watered-down to the point that they are seen as a parody or sarcastic, which end up hurting the CCP.
High-level Black: ill-intentioned, meticulous attacks on the CCP through the use of humor or satire. From the surface, it appears to align with the CCP's narrative, but in reality, they are critiquing them
Taiwanization
The process of separating Taiwan from China by emphasizing the importance of Taiwanese culture, society, and nationality. This involves teaching history, geography, and culture from a Taiwan-centric perspective, like promoting languages locally established in Taiwan, including Tayal.
Great Wall
It is a physical representation of Chinese history that shows how China separated from the “settled people and nomadic barbarians”. Today is used by the CCP to show the patriotic spirit of unity, the spirit of perseverance, and self-improvement.
Shi Lang
A loyalist from the Qing Dynasty, who kicked out the Ming Dynasty and took control of Taiwan from Koxinga. He attempted to Hanify Taiwan by encouraging those from China to immigrate their and they brought their Chinese language
228 Incident
On Feb 27th, the KMT police beat a woman attempting to sell illegal cigarettes and killed a protester attempting to stop them. On Feb 28th, mass protest erupted across the country, leading to the KMT to violently crack down on locals. A committee composed of the Taiwanese gov. Proposes 32 Demands to Democracy. March 7th: Leading to the KMT declaring martial law and gaining reinforcement from the mainland. Today Feb. 28th is a national holiday held in remembrance of the spontaneous protest that occurred because of one woman standing up.
Double-Edged Sword
The CCP's mass promotion of nationalism can create legitimacy and unify people, but it risks spinning out of control and sparking protests. EX: Mud Grass Horse, ideotainment, hip/hop culture, etc.
"Status Quo"
A popular notion that Taiwan is in a de-facto state of independence, where it functions as a self-governed democracy while avoiding a formal decleration of democracy or offical unification with China.

K-pop Idol, who was controversial in 2016, when she raised a Taiwanese flag in an advertisement video, where she faced a lot of backlash from Chinese netizens. She was then allegedly forced to film an apology video to her Chinese fans, and say there was ‘one China’.
White Terror
An era of martial law, following the 228 incident, that lasted for years and shaped people's perceptions of the KMT and China. It allowed the KMT Nationalists to arrest, interrogate, torture, and imprison those who disagreed with their ideas. It showed the top-down approach the KMT was using to crack down on the bottom-up uprising and implement a stronger party system.
Haiography
Using the legacy of a memorial figure, who is dead, to attain legitimacy and justify authority. For example, Chiang Kai-Shek built Sun Yat-Sen Memorial on purple mountains to appeal to his followers that his ideas are the same.
Glocalization
The process of adapting a global product to a local market by speaking to the tension between a global idea and local circumstances. For example, different global platforms have to adjust to China's firewall by relasing products that can pass through them.
Yuanmingyuan
The old summer palace in Beijing that was the target of a retaliatory attack by the British who first looted the palace then set it on fire. It was during the second opium war in the Century of Humiliation. It is significant because it fostered western resentment and today it serves as a gateway for CCP legitimacy in their goal to establish a historical memory.
Hu Taiming
The main protagonist of 'Orphan of Asia', who is a national orphan, whom is adrift without a country. He is a representative of Taiwan's lack of identity and its pulled between premodern Confucian values that he grew up with and modern Japanese colonial education, with which he earned a degree.

A novel by Wu Zhuoli, which is an allegory for Taiwan's lost identity and lack of belonging in the greater sphere of larger Asian powers during its colonization by Western and Asian states. It depicts Taiwan as a quasi-country in search of a national identity that is constantly changing.
Ideotainment
CCP co-opting popular web or phone media entertainment to promote a certain nationalist and ideological propaganda. For example, their Great Firewall allows them to use censorship and financial incentives to localize and sanitize foreign-imported hip-hop culture into their own.
