1. This phase of matter has a definite shape and volume and VIBRATES only
Solid
What is matter?
anything that has mass and takes up space
What is the main reason that hot water evaporates faster than room temp water?
Molecules are moving at a faster rate and spread out more
solid
What happens to the volume of gas as it gets warmed up?
it increases
2. The particles in this phase of matter move around one another, but do not have enough energy to completely separate from one another.
Liquid
7. This sequence of phase changes occur when water boils on a stove and there are water droplets forming on the top of the lid.(What two phases)
What is evaporation and then condensation?
Snowflakes are seen melting as they fall through the air. This meeting occurs because of the snowflakes.
1. lose heat and the surrounding air loses heat
2. Lose heat and the surrounding air gains heat
3. Gain heat and the surrounding air gains heat
4. Gain heat and the surrounding air loses heat
4.
gas
All matter is made up of
1. cells
2. molecules
3. compounds
4. atoms
4. atoms
3. Particles in this phase of matter take the shape of the ENTIRE volume of the container it is in.
Gas
Which process occurs when dry ice changes into a gas WITHOUT going through the liquid phase?
Sublimation
Why does food coloring spread out slower in cold water than in hot water?
Molecules move slower in cold water taking it longer for the dye to disperse.
liquid
Rank the following in order from greatest energy to least.
Liquid
Solid
Gas
Gas - Liquid- Solid
Explain how a thermometer works (Hot and COLD)- use the words molecules in your explanation
When a thermometer is placed in a hot liquid or substance the molecules in the thermometer liquid start to move faster and spread out this allows for the liquid in the thermometer to spread out and read a higher temp. When placed in a cold substance the molecules in the thermometer liquid start to slow down and condense making the thermometer read at a lower temp.
A pan of uncovered water at 25 celsius is slowly evaporating. Which of these actions would cause the water to evaporate more quickly?
Heat the water in the pan
EXPLAIN why the balloon INFLATED when placed in a beaker of hot water.
The balloon inflated because the air molecules started to become hotter meaning they started to move faster and spread out. They ended up spreading out so much that the balloon started to inflate.
plasma
This process occurs when water vapor changes into frost without going through the liquid phase.
Deposition
DAILY DOUBLE!! Explain what happens during condensation on a cold glass of water- be specific and talk about what is happening to the molecules and bonds.
When the warm air comes in contact with the cold glass the molecules start to slow down and condense. This allows for the bonds to start reforming turning the gas back into a liquid.
Explain why temperature does NOT change during a phase change.
Temperature does not change during a phase change because all the heat energy goes towards making or breaking the bonds NOT increasing or decreasing molecule speed.
Solids tend to be the most dense phase of matter except for this everyday liquid where the liquid phase is more dense than the solid phase. EXPLAIN WHY water floats and why this is important to our everyday world?
a liquid is boiling into a gas
Explain what temperature is a measure of.
Temperature is a measure of how fast or slow the molecules are moving.
