What is composition?

The arrangement of visual elements, such as shapes, colors, and textures, within the photographic image.

100

What is "exposure triangle" and what does it consist of?

the three different settings that allow you to adjust the light that enters your camera. ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed.

100

In studio photography this is the camera's aperture where it (usually) always remains.

f/8

100

What is the "camera body"?

hard plastic shell that encompasses the mirror, shutter, sensor, pentaprism and viewfinder

100

What are pixels ?

tiny dot of a single color

200

What are "lines" in photographic composition?

Compositional element that typically draws the viewer's eye along its length, making it a useful tool for directing attention.

200

What does raising the ISO do to your camera/image?

makes sensor more sensitive to light (brighter picture) and increases the noise in the final image

200

In studio photography this is the camera's ISO where it always remains.

200

200

What is the shutter button?

when this is pressed the mirror flips up

200

what is focal length?

the distance between the optical center of the lens and the sensor

300

What are compositional elements?

The basic components used for effectively composing photographs.

300

What is a good ISO, shutter speed and aperture for photos in sunlight?

ISO: 100 or 200

Shutter speed: 1/200-1/400

Aperture: between f/8 and f/22

300

In studio photography this is the camera's shutter speed where it always remains.

1/125

300

What does DSLR stand for?

 Digital Single Lens Reflex

300

What is landscape mode ?

Image format that is wider than it is tall—a horizontal rectangle.

400

What is "negative space" in photographic composition?

The area within the frame surrounding the subject. This area can isolate and emphasize the subject.

400
How do small f stop and large f stop numbers affect your photo's depth of field?

large f-stop number    results in longer, or deeper depth of field

small f-stop number    results in smaller, more shallow depth of field

400

What is "direct flash" in studio photography?

Aiming the flash "straight on" at the subject from a position directly over or right next to the lens.

400

What is the sensor?

part that records the image

400

What is exclusion

Selectively framing to eliminate unwanted elements in the photo, sometimes referred to as cropping in the camera.

500

What is "camera angle" in photographic composition?

Any of the different points of view that can be used to vary a picture's composition and visual impact.

500

If your photo is overexposed and the ISO is 100, shutter speed is 1 second, and the aperture is 2.8, how would you achieve a good exposure?

1. Increase aperture.

2. Increase shutter speed.

500

What is the "hot shoe" used for?

Flash mounting terminal often located on top of an SLR. Its electrical contacts mate with those on the flash unit, triggering the flash when the shutter release is pressed.

500

What is the pentaprism?

part that reflects the image out through the viewfinder

the film    in a film camera, it is equal to the sensor in a digital camera

500

What is convergence ?

A compositional problem in which parts of the image come together in an undesirable way.
