Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is MATTER?
These are the three main types of matter.
What are senses?
The amount of matter in an object.
What is mass?
Is blending fruits into a smoothie a chemical change? Why?
NO. To make a smoothie, you change the physical form of the fruit, so nothing new is being created.
This is the state of matter that liquid becomes when it freezes.
What is solid?
Name two physical properties of a lemon.
What are hard, squishy, yellow, round, small, low density, acidity when tasted, etc.?
These are the properties we can observe with only our senses.
Name a physical change that may happen to a loaf of bread.
Slicing/Cutting
Is a cake an example of a chemical change? Why?
What is a cake, because you cannot turn a cake back into the eggs, flour, sugar, etc. that you mixed together?
This is the state of matter that solids become upon melting.
What is liquid?
This is the physical property that allows iron filings to be separated from sand.
What is magnetism?
Theses are the properties that only exist as reactions.
What are chemical properties?
The physical change that liquids undergo when temperatures drop low enough.
What is freezing?
This is the chemical change that iron undergoes when it reacts with oxygen and water.
What is rusting?
This is the process by which a solid skips the liquid phase and becomes a gas.
What is sublimation?
This is the chemical property that indicates poisonousness.
What is toxicity?
A type of change where the substance stays the same.
What is a physical change?
CHALLENGE: Explain how the water cycle is an example of a physical change.
Water changes from a liquid/solid when it precipitates, to a gas when it evaporates, then forms back into a liquid when it condensates. Then the process repeats again with the same substance, WATER!
This is the chemical change that a sudden bad smell may be an indicator of.
What is rotting/decay/souring?
Which four changes involve liquid (either something becoming liquid, or liquid becoming something else)?
What are melting, freezing, evaporating, and condensing?
A tablespoon of salt is dissolved in an 8oz glass of hot water. This type of change has occurred.
