100

Anything that has mass and takes up space.

What is matter?
100

The study of how atoms and molecules interact with each other.

What is chemistry?

100

This type of substance has multiple components that are chemically combined in fixed proportions.

What is a compound?

100

Explain how to separate sand from water. What is the process called?

Pour water and sand mixture through a filter into a jar. The sand will stay in the filter while the water will end up in the jar. This process is filtration.
100

If a building is 174 m tall, give its height in ft (1m = 3.28 ft).

What is 570.72 ft?

200

A mixture in which the particles of a substance are mixed enough to settle.

What is a suspension?

200

Are atoms and molecules the same? Explain.

No, molecules are made from atoms.

200
(True/False) A sample of matter can be both a compound and a pure substance.

What is true?

200

The physical response that identifies a colloid. What type of evidence does it provide?  Explain

What is the Tyndall effect and it provides indirect evidence?

The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light that happens when a light is directed at a colloid.

200

(True/False) Magnets can be used to separate iron objects from a mixture.

What is true?

300

The smallest unit into which an element can be divided and still maintain the properties of the element.

What is an atom?

300
The process that separates salt from water.

What is distillation?

300

Explain how elements and compounds are similar.

Both are pure substances so they are chemically combined and are the same throughout the whole substance.

300

A combination of substances in which the particles are not uniformly distributed.

What is a heterogeneous mixture?

300

If the length of a wall is 48.75 ft, what is its length in centimeters (1 in = 2.54 cm)?

What is 1,485.9 cm?

400

A particle consisting of two or more atoms chemically tied together.

What is a molecule?

400

The reason we classify matter.

What is being able to study creation and talk about it in detail with others?

400
Is water an element or a compound?

What is a compound?

400

(True/False) Filter paper can be used to separate salt from water.

What is false?

400

(True/False) The particles in a suspension are large enough to see.

What is true?

500

Describe a suspension.

A suspension is a mixture that has visible, suspended particles that will eventually settle. The particles are large enough to block light and be separated by using a filter.

500

List 3 benefits and drawbacks of scientific pursuits.

Benefits - medicines, machinery, better foods, faster transportation, rapid communication methods, nuclear power, and space exploration

Drawbacks - possible climate change, ozone depletion, chemical pollution, radioactive waste, and chemicals that harm God's creation.

500

The study of matter, energy, motion and forces.

What is physics?

500
Explain how to distinguish a homogenous mixture from a compound.

The chemical composition must be determined. If the components are chemically combined, the substance is a compound. If the components are not chemically combined, the substance is a homogenous mixture.

500

Describe the separation process the miners used during the California gold rush.

The miners took metal pans and washed the mixture of river sediments. The smooth metal pans had slightly angled sides and as the miners swirled the water, the lighter particles washed over the sides, leaving the heavier particles, including the gold pieces, in the bottom. After the heavy pieces dried, miners used a magnet to remove some of the iron-rich sand and then picked out the gold from what was left in the pan.
