What are the units of acceleration?

(Write the answer with English words!)

Answer: meters per second squared

According to Newton's first law, who has more inertia, Michael-sensei or Okazaki-sensei? Why?

Answer: Michael-sensei has more inertia because he has more mass.

100

True or False?

Conservation of mechanical energy says that the change of kinetic energy is zero.

Answer: False

It says that the change of kinetic energy plus the change of potential energy is zero!

What is the difference between a scalar and vector?

Answer: A scalar is just a number/value/amount. A vector is a value with a direction!

200

Write this math equation in English:

( 4 x 3 ) + 7 = 19

Answer:

four times three, plus seven, equals nineteen

200

What does the slope (傾き) of a v-t graph tell us?

Answer: It tells us the acceleration of an object.

Michael-sensei has a sandwich which has a mass of 500 grams. One day, Michael-sensei goes crazy. He throws his sandwich out of his apartment window with a force of 30 Newtons. What was the acceleration of the sandwich?

Answer: 60 m/s^2

According to conservation of ME, what did not affect the distance that the metal ball flew in our experiment?

A) acceleration because of gravity

B) the height of the ball from the table top

C) the velocity of the ball

D) the mass of the ball

D) the mass of the ball

200

Which of these are vectors?

displacement, distance, speed, velocity, mass

Answer: displacement, velocity

300

Write this equation in English:

a^2 + b^3 = x^4

Answer:

a squared plus b cubed equals x to the fourth [power]

One day, Michael-sensei walked 100 meters to MaxValu to buy milk. After that, he went back home the same way. What distance did he travel?

(don't count the distance he walked inside MaxValu)

Answer: 200 meters

300

What is the total force on this object?

Answer: 17 N to the right (positive x direction)

300

Write down one thing we ignored or assumed when we guessed the x for the ball?

Answer: friction, other causes of energy loss, human error, etc.

300

Which of these are scalars?

temperature, force, energy, acceleration, time

Answer: temperature, time, energy

400

Write this number in English:

2.16 x 10^32

two point one six times ten to the thirty second power

One day, Michael-sensei decided to go to Hakkaku Ramen. The ramen shop is 5 km from his apartment. He rode his bike to the ramen shop. Because he had to stop for traffic or other people walking, he changed his speed many times. In the end, he arrived at the ramen shop after 30 minutes. What was his average speed?

Answer: 10 kilometers per hour

400

Why are free-body diagrams useful?

Answer: It is because we can see all forces on an object.

400

Which equation should be used to calculate the fall time?

A) V = Vo + gt

B) y = Vot + 1/2gt^2

C) V2^ - Vo^2 = 2gy

Answer: B)

Vot is zero because when the string was cut, the ball had no velocity in the y-direction. All of its velocity was in the x-direction.

*** Of course, if you made an error when you did the experiment, this may not be true :) ***

True or False?

Vectors pointing only in one direction exist.

Answer: True

Write this number in English: -314,981

Answer: negative three hundred fourteen thousand nine hundred [and] eighty-one

One day, Michael-sensei left his apartment. He biked 8000 meters to Tatsuno. Then, he walked around Tatsuno all day while trying to find Momo. He walked 3000 meters in Tatsuno. In the end, he couldn't find Momo, so he returned to his apartment.

Question: What was his total displacement for the day?

Answer: zero

One day, Michael-sensei is working out. He decides to push a heavy box to train. The box has a mass of 300 kg. From rest (v1 = 0), he pushes the box to a final velocity of 100 m/s in 10 seconds. What force did he put on the box?

Answer: 3000 N

500

After the string was cut, we used this last equation for the final to step to guess our x

x = Vot + 1/2at^2.

Michael-sensei said that the acceleration in the x-direction was zero. Is this actually true? Why or why not?

Answer: No, it is not true because of friction forces of the air. Because of Newton's second law, we know that a force on an object causes acceleration. Therefore, acceleration was not zero.

*** BUUUUUUUT the friction force is quite small, so we can say it is almost zero or like zero ***

True or False?

You can add a scalar to a vector, and you can multiply a vector by a scalar.
